On Tuesday, vigilant locals stopped an attempted robbery plunder at the State Bank of India’s (SBI) Balianta branch on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

According to sources, the villain carried out the loot by wielding a toy gun at the bank staff during bank hours.

The robber was sitting in a branch for several hours. He pulled out a toy gun when staff began closing the bank and demanded cash. The robber picked up Rs 832,000 in cash and gold ornaments and rushed out of the bank, sources added.

The robber was identified as Shankar Parida and came from the Balianta area. He attacked two of the four bankers and camped with cash and gold.

However, vigilant locals chased the robbers, caught him in a nearby field, and recovered cash and gold ornaments from him. Later he was handed over to the police.

A few days ago, an ATM looting bid failed in the old town area of Bhubaneswar. On August 25, police caught a thief trying to plunder money from the State Bank of India’s ATM in the Old Town’s Badei Banka Square, which is under the restrictions of the Ringaraja police.

The looters used a simple device that plugged into an automated teller machine to prevent cash from being paid out. After the customer left the kiosk without cash, the thief collected money after removing the blocking device.
