Wilmington, NC (WECT)-The North Carolina Investigative Service said an investigation into a shooting involving police officers in Wilmington earlier this week was underway.
Law enforcement officials say 33-year-old John Ryan Lucoski was shot Wednesday after trying to hit a New Hanover County adjutant in his car in downtown Wilmington.
“(SBI) was requested by the Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, and District Attorney’s Office to investigate police officers involved in the shooting in Wilmington,” SBI said in a news release on Friday. Said in. “The officers involved were identified as Andrew Vruman, 29, from Wilmington Police Station and Stanley Taylor, 48, from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. SBI investigations into police officers involved in the shooting continued. No additional information at this time. “
According to standard protocols, Vrooman and Taylor were on leave until the results of the investigation were available.
Officials say police officers tried to stop the vehicle around 5 pm on Wednesday due to a traffic violation, but the driver refused to stop. Police supervisors decided not to track the vehicles due to the large number of vehicles on the road at the time.
After a while, the driver was accused of tracking a WPD vehicle. At the same time, NHCSO’s adjutant was walking near Fourth Street and Grace Street, which provided civilian paperwork.
According to investigators, when the suspect tried to hit the adjutant in his car, both the WPD officer and the adjutant shot the man and beat him at least once.
The suspect drove a few blocks before colliding with a police vehicle and was subsequently detained on Grace and McRae.
