‘No faith in CBI’
‘Targets Trinamool’
Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee has approached the Supreme Court against the CBI’s order to probe the post-poll violence in West Bengal. The state government had alleged in the petition that the CBI was acting on the instructions of the Center.
The state government has approached the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court verdict ordering a CBI probe. The Bengal government has accused the CBI of acting on the Centre’s instructions and of targeting the ruling Trinamool Congress, citing lack of confidence in the central agency.
The CBI has so far registered 31 cases in connection with post-election violence in West Bengal.
On August 19, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the alleged murder, rape and attempted rape in West Bengal. A special inquiry team has also been formed under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge to probe other criminal cases.
The court also ordered the National Human Rights Commission to investigate human rights violations in the state following the election. The report of the Human Rights Commission’s inquiry was a strong criticism of the Mamata Banerjee government. The report said that the rule of law in the state was being replaced by the rule of law.
However, the Trinamool Congress alleges that the Center is using central agencies to target its leaders.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate has summoned Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and Diamond Harbor MP Abhishek Banerjee and his wife for questioning in a money laundering case related to the West Bengal coal scam. His wife Rujira Banerjee has been asked to appear before the ED on September 1 and Abhishek on September 6.
