Narendra Dabolkar murder: CBI wants probe under UAPA section

The CBI has asked the court to try the five accused in the Narendra Dabolkar murder case under the UAPA section. The CBI has filed a case against them in the court alleging that they had spread terror among a section of people.
Dr. Virendrasingh Thawde, Sharad Kalaskar, Sachin Andure, Adv. Arguments against Sanjeev Punelekar and Vikram Bhave began before Additional Sessions Judge SR Navander on Friday.

Special Public Prosecutor Prakash Suryavanshi, appearing for the CBI, said the case was registered against the accused under sections 120B and 120B of the IPC and relevant sections of the Arms Act. Suryavanshi added that the CBI had received permission from the state government to file charges under Section 16 of the UAPA. The case is set to return to court on September 7.

Dabolkar was shot dead on August 20, 2013, while leading a legal campaign to stop superstition. He was shot dead by two unidentified motorcyclists on a bridge near the Omkareshwara temple during a morning walk in Pune. The incident sparked massive protests at the national level.
